Coaching Staff


About Our Coaches
Mass Youth Soccer is fortunate to have a strong corps of both full-time and part-time instructional staff personnel to run its active Instructional program that provides for both coach and player development. 

Our full-time staff is comprised of five talented individuals – a Director of Coaching, Director of Training and Evaluation, and three Development Coaches. Here is a brief outline of their backgrounds.


Mike Singleton – Director of Coaching
 



Mike currently serves as the Head State Coach and Director of Coaching for the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association. Prior to his current position, he directed both the Kirkwood Soccer club (DE) and the Barrington Area Soccer Association (IL) and worked as a collegiate men's coach at the NCAA I and II levels. Mike has served as a NCAA II women's coach and currently assists the Emerson College women's soccer team. He is a Region I ODP Senior Staff Coach and a US Youth Soccer National Staff Coach. Mike has served on the FIFA Technical Committee for the 2003 Women's World Cup and worked on the CONCACAF Technical Committee for the 2005 Gold Cup. Prior to coaching, Mike worked as a psychologist after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and earning a Master's Degree in child clinical psychology from Purdue University. He has conducted and published research in both sports psychology and nutrition. Mike holds his USSF A, NSCAA Premier, and NSCAA GK Level I licenses as well as having his US National Youth, KNVB Youth, and FA Youth Licenses.

Tom Goodman - Director of Training and Evaluation



Tom Goodman joined Mass Youth Soccer as the Director of Training and Evaluation, the newest position in the association, in March 2007.  Tom holds a Masters Degree in Administration of Education as well as the USSF "A" and USSF National Youth Licenses.  Coach Goodman continues to work as a National Staff Instructor at the USSF National Coaching Schools.  Coach Goodman’s previous positions include: US Youth Soccer National Director of Coaching Education, USSF Region I National Staff Coach and Director of Coaching and Player Development for the PA West Soccer Association.

Fred King - Development Coach



Fred began his tenure here on our hill on April 28th, 2008.  Prior to joining the full time staff at MYSA, Fred was an Assistant Men's Soccer Coach at Harvard University and previously coached at Tufts University and the Noble and Greenough School. Currently, Fred also assists with the Men's Soccer team at Bentley University. For six years Fred coached club soccer in Massachusetts for F.C. Greater Boston Bolts and South Shore Selects. This season is Fred's sixth year coaching with Mass ODP, where he will serve as the Head Coach for the Boys Under 15 Team. A graduate of Goldsmiths College, University of London, Fred captained his first-eleven soccer team, becoming the only American player to achieve this honor. During his three years in London, Fred also played for the University of London Select 1st XI Team and was involved with coaching at Wimbledon Football Club (Community Scheme). Fred holds a USSF "B" License, an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA and a National Diploma from the Royal Netherlands Football Association.

Lynn Gugliuzza - Development Coach



Mass Youth Soccer officially welcomed Lynn Gugliuzza to the coaching staff on July 29th, 2008 during a period of reconstruction.  Lynn is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire where she played as a Goal Keeper.  Lynn holds a NSCAA National Diploma, and an NSCAA State and Regional Goalkeeping Diploma.  She will be attending the USSF C course this summer. Lynn is currently an Assistant and Goalkeeper coach at Simmons College and will be working as an Assistant with the '96 ODP girl's team.  She was also a Graduate Assistant at Boston University and Volunteer Assistant at UNH.  Lynn assisted with ODP Goal Keepers in Massachusetts. She holds a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Coaching from Boston University.

Renato Capobianco - Development Coach



Renato Capobianco joins our staff after several years of coaching both at the club and high school levels in the greater Boston area. Renato holds a Masters Degree in Exercise Science as well as an "A" License from US Soccer, a Premier Diploma from the NSCAA, and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist from the NSCA. He spent four years as an assistant coach in Major League Soccer (Tampa Bay Mutiny & New England Revolution) and served as Director of Soccer for the San Jose Earthquakes and New England Revolution. Renato also was the Team Administrator for the US Men’s National Team from 1991 through the 1994 World Cup.

Loy Urbina - Development Coach

Loy Urbina has had a rich experience as a coach and instructor in the Youth Soccer arena.  A member of the New Jersey Youth Soccer Association for many years, Loy was an important part of the instructional staff and the ODP staff.  His club coaching experience in New Jersey was with Match Fit FC and Pittsgrove Premier Futbol.  Loy is a Region I ODP Staff coach and take head coaching responsibilities with the Mass Youth Soccer ODP U-13Girls.  He holds the USSF “A” License, the USSF National Youth License, the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, the NSCAA Goalkeeper Level 1 Diploma and the KNVB (Royal Netherlands Football Association) International Diploma.  As a Foreign Language teacher in New Jersey for 20 years, he coached Girls and Boys High School Varsity soccer.  Loy has a Master of Education Degree in Athletic Counseling from Springfield College.

Instructional Staff
In addition to Mike, Tom and the four development coaches, Mass Youth Soccer also has an Instructional Staff that is composed of a diverse group of men and women who are dedicated to high ideals in sports and to the development of excellent coaches.  Most are teachers, many are college coaches; all have wide experience in soccer.  Most of the staff coaches have US Soccer A or B licenses.
