DVD REVIEW

Drills for beginning Goalkeepers
Reedswain DVD
BY LAURA RAY
Development Coach

This DVD entails 95 different activities for goalkeepers. The age group recommendation would be U12 and up. Many of the activities would  be considered for the U14 and U16 age groups.

Although the activities are beneficial to goalkeepers, they do not touch on the techniques involved in the position. So, if using this DVD and its activities, be sure you have a clear understanding of the techniques entailed in goalkeeping.

Select activities throughout the DVD would assist the coach introducing how to use hands, shoulders, feet, and upper body to a new goalkeeper, but again they are only the activities to help focus on those areas, not the information in regards to technique. Many of the activities would and should be utilized in specific goalkeeper training. You will also find some plyometric work intertwined into some activities as well.

The DVD states “…the exercises in this video are structured for the coaches of youth teams who do not have a specific coach for their goalkeepers.” However, upon further review, many of the activities would be difficult to run for an entire team, as well as during a team session. As a coach, you may want either have your goalkeeper(s) come early to practice to train specifically with them and/or have another coach who can work with them during your training.

Either way, the activities in this DVD would be of great benefit to the goalkeeper (s) and the coach as they could add new dimensions/variations to their training in this position.
